A Tree Falls On Your Car — Who Pays?

Image
Malaysia is entering the October–November inter-monsoon period, when thunderstorms are more frequent. METMalaysia says thunderstorms are common throughout Malaysia and become more frequent during the inter-monsoon periods. On 4 October 2026, METMalaysia issued a thunderstorm warning covering several states including Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Melaka and Johor. For motorists, there's an insurance question worth checking now: What happens if a tree falls on my car? Comprehensive Does Not Automatically Mean Everything According to PIAM, standard motor policies do not automatically cover damage from natural events such as: Flood Storm Landslide Fallen trees caused by natural events The relevant Special Perils extension can provide protection against these risks, subject to the policy terms.  Example Imagine: Car insured value: RM100,000 A storm causes a tree to fall onto your car. Repair estimate: RM12,000 Whether you can claim depends on your actual policy coverage. If you have ...

Bought Travel Insurance 3 Days Before Your Trip — Is It Too Late?

Image
Many people buy travel insurance only after their holiday is already fully planned. Flight booked. Hotel booked. Activities booked. Then: “Oh, I haven't bought travel insurance yet.” This may still provide useful protection for certain risks, but one important point is often overlooked: Some Benefits Have Purchase Timing Conditions For example, Generali's current travel-insurance information states that its Cancellation/Postponement benefit requires the insurance to be purchased at least 14 days before the scheduled trip . That means the timing of purchase can matter. A Simple Example Imagine you've prepaid: Flight: RM2,000 Hotel: RM2,500 Activities: RM500 Total: RM5,000 You purchase travel insurance three days before departure. The next day, a serious illness affects an immediate family member and you need to cancel the trip. The first question shouldn't simply be: “I bought travel insurance. Why can't I claim?” The better question is: ...

Malaysia OPR Stays at 2.75%: What Does It Mean for Your Money?

Image
On 3 September 2026 , Bank Negara Malaysia maintained the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75% . The next Monetary Policy Committee decision is scheduled for 5 November 2026 . For many Malaysians, “OPR 2.75%” sounds like just another economic headline. But it can affect different parts of your financial life differently. 1. If You Have A Variable-Rate Loan If your financing is linked to a benchmark affected by OPR, changes in the policy rate can eventually affect borrowing costs. With the OPR unchanged, there is generally no new OPR-driven rate change from this particular decision. But don't assume every loan behaves identically. Your actual rate depends on: Loan package Bank's pricing Reference rate Loan agreement Fixed or variable structure So check your actual loan documents. 2. If You Keep Money In FD OPR influences the overall interest-rate environment. But: OPR ≠ Your FD Rate Don't assume that a 2.75% OPR means your FD automatically earns 2.75%. Co...

Flood Damages Your House — Does Home Insurance Cover Everything?

Image
Malaysia continues to experience episodes of heavy rain and thunderstorms. On 17 September 2026 , MetMalaysia issued short-term thunderstorm warnings covering parts of several states and Labuan. For homeowners, this raises an important question: If my house is damaged by flood, will my home insurance pay for everything? The answer depends on your actual policy. HouseOwner vs Householder One of the most important distinctions is: HouseOwner This generally relates to the building structure , such as the residential building and associated fixtures, subject to the policy. Householder This generally relates to household contents and personal belongings . Generali, for example, describes Houseowner as protection for the home building and Householder as protection for household contents and belongings. Simple Example Imagine a flood causes: Building damage: RM30,000 Furniture & appliances: RM15,000 Your total loss could be RM45,000. But the important question isn't simply: “Do I ...

More Malaysians Are Investing — But Are You Investing Safely?

Image
Investing ≠ Following A Recommendation 5 Checks Before Investing 1. 3. Understand where your money goes 5. Don't invest because of FOMO “今天最后一天。”

Heavy Rain Again — Does Your Car Insurance Cover Flood?

Image
Comprehensive ≠ Automatically Covered for Flood

Inflation

Image
#PersonalFinance #FinancialPlanning #MoneyManagement #Investing #InvestmentTips #Inflation #FinancialLiteracy ...
