A Tree Falls On Your Car — Who Pays?

Malaysia is entering the October–November inter-monsoon period, when thunderstorms are more frequent. METMalaysia says thunderstorms are common throughout Malaysia and become more frequent during the inter-monsoon periods.

On 4 October 2026, METMalaysia issued a thunderstorm warning covering several states including Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Perak, Melaka and Johor.

For motorists, there's an insurance question worth checking now:

What happens if a tree falls on my car?

Comprehensive Does Not Automatically Mean Everything

According to PIAM, standard motor policies do not automatically cover damage from natural events such as:

  • Flood
  • Storm
  • Landslide
  • Fallen trees caused by natural events

The relevant Special Perils extension can provide protection against these risks, subject to the policy terms.

Example

Imagine:

Car insured value: RM100,000

A storm causes a tree to fall onto your car.

Repair estimate: RM12,000

Whether you can claim depends on your actual policy coverage.

If you have the relevant Special Perils coverage:

There may be cover, subject to the policy.

If you don't:

You should not assume your Comprehensive policy automatically covers the damage.

What Should You Check?

1. Special Perils

Look under the additional coverage section of your policy schedule.

2. Windscreen

Check whether you have separate windscreen coverage.

3. Excess

Understand how much you may have to bear yourself.

4. Sum Insured

Make sure the vehicle's insured value is appropriate.

5. Claims Procedure

Know who to contact and what documentation is required.

If A Tree Actually Falls On Your Car

Don't immediately start repairing the vehicle.

Instead:

📸 Take photographs

📍 Record where and when it happened

📞 Notify your insurer / agent

📄 Keep relevant reports and documents

Then follow the insurer's instructions.

One Simple Question

Don't wait for the next storm.

Open your motor policy and ask:

“If a tree falls on my car because of a storm, am I covered?”

That five-minute check can be more useful than assuming “Comprehensive” means everything.

⚠️ Actual coverage, exclusions, excess and claim payment depend on the specific policy wording and circumstances.
